The Importance of Doing What You Love

The Importance of Doing What You Love Even When Family Disagrees.

How many times have you wanted to follow a passion, do a job you love or try something you’ve dreamt of for years, only to find that your loving and caring family cautiously plea for you not to. They care. They love you and they fear for you but you are unhappy, unfulfilled and worried. Your passion is simmering but dwindling. You don’t want to upset your family, after all-you know they are just concerned for you- but you feel empty without doing what you love.

As adults, we often find ourselves feeling a little lost or empty. Men find this but women are more often the victim of family concerns. After all, we are the nurturers when the kids are young, the ole models as they get a little older and then, almost overnight, we become their source for concern.

Our adult children start to fear for us. They want us to be healthy and happy but without taking undue risks (undue only in their mind). In a recent consultation, one of our therapists was talking to a lovely lady. She has adult kids with families of their own now. She is an aged carer and has had a sabbatical due to her health. Now, she is keen to work. Aged care is her passion. She feels energised and charged when helping others but with a medical history that has alarmed her kids, she is being discouraged from working. She feels empty and unfulfilled but understands their concerns. Her health is now stable and she is eager to work but doesn’t want to upset the family either. So where to from here?

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life- Confucius

The consequences of not doing what you love

Throughout history, we have heard (or versions of) this quote (above). What happens when we don’t do what we love? We become stressed. Stress, even at a low-grade level, causes dis-ease. The systems of the body rely on what is known as homeostasis- the tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes. When under stress of any degree, homeostasis is not achieved.

Continually making allowances in your life due to the fears of other people is only one factor in disrupting homeostasis through constant low-grade stress.  Now, we are not even addressing major stressors here. By being in a job you dislike, by putting your passion on the back-burner, by holding yourself back to appease others- you will cause long term stress.

The physical implications of continual stress can manifest as or exacerbate many serious health problems, including: Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks and stroke.

So what do we do about it?

Well, let’s look at the example of the gorgeous lady we mentioned. Sitting down in a family meeting may be helpful. Explaining why she loves her job and what positives it brings will help alleviate the fears of her children. Assurance here is the key. She should be discussing with them that she knows her limits physically and that she will not take any undue risks but that ignoring her passion will bring about the health problems the kids fear.
